Tasmanian Skilled Occupations List (TSOL) 2020 – 2021

What is TSOL?

The Tasmanian Skilled Occupations List (TSOL) identifies skills that are currently in demand in Tasmania and is derived from the list of eligible occupations for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491), as defined by the Australian Government. The occupations listed have been identified by the Tasmanian Government as areas of skills shortage in the State, based on the extent of evidence currently available.

What is it used for?

For Tasmanian Government nomination purposes, it is used in the assessment of applications falling under ‘Category 3A – Overseas Applicant’ for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491), and Category 2 – Working in Tasmania for the Skilled Nominated visa.

Working in Tasmania – Category 2

For subclass 190 nomination applicants who seek nomination in the Working in Tasmania, category must have a skills assessment for an occupation on the TSOL, be working in a related area and meet the additional English language requirements listed for their occupation.

Overseas Applicants – Category 3A

For overseas applicants in category 3A, and application for nomination cannot be made without an invitation from Migration Tasmania. Please note that the list is only an indicator of skill shortages and if your occupation is listed below, it does not mean that you will be invited to apply for nomination or that employment is guaranteed for you in Tasmania. Applicants must compete in the local job market to secure employment. From time to time where sudden critical labour market needs are identified Migration Tasmania may contact people who have lodged an EOI with an occupation not listed ion TSOL.

If invited to apply, applicants must meet the additional English language, experience and employability requirement specified for the occupation.

Overseas Applicants – Category 3B

Overseas applicants in Category 3B who have a job offer in an area related to the TSOL must have a Skills Assessment in that area and should meet the additional English and registration / experience requirements listed for that occupation on the TSOL

High Demand Occupations – Exemption from employability requirement

Some occupations are designated as “High Demand” in the list below. Applicants for nomination under the ‘Overseas Applicant Category (3A)’ for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) do not need to provide employability research and evidence if they meet the experience, English requirements and any other items specified for that occupation.

Notes regarding TSOL review outcomes

A review of TSOL was conducted from November 2019 – November 2020. Advice from a range of sources was used to identify areas of skill shortage that should be targeted though Tasmania’s State Nominated Skilled Migration Program. Sources included:

• Skills Tasmania
• Australian Department of Employment, Skills and Education
• Tasmanian Department of Education
• Tasmanian Health Service
• Industry peak bodies
• Recruitment agencies

As a result of the review, 60 occupations were removed on the basis that available information could not support a conclusion that there is a shortage of professionals in Tasmanian in those areas. Notably, 30 specialist health professions were removed. Data indicated that employment growth in these occupations was expected to be low or negative over the next two years.

A total of 29 occupations were added to the revised TSOL. This includes a number of pharmacy, health technician and graphic and web design occupations where strong growth in employment opportunities are expected.

In addition 117 occupations were identified for further consultation with industry regarding possible inclusion, removal or further identification of detailed skills needs.
