Before you travel to Australia, you should complete the Australia Travel Declaration at least 72 hours before your departure.
Travellers who should complete an Australia Travel Declaration:
- Australian citizens and permanent residents
- people who are automatically exempt from Australia’s travel restrictions
- people who have been granted an individual exemption to the current travel restrictions
- transit passengers.
Travellers who do not need to complete an Australia Travel Declaration:
- flight crew
- foreign diplomats
- people travelling on military flights
- people arriving by sea (both crew and passengers).
The Australia Travel Declaration collects your contact details in Australia, flight details, vaccination information, quarantine requirements and your health status.
This information helps the Australian Government determine your quarantine arrangements (if required) and also allows the relevant health departments to contact you if someone you travelled with tests positive for COVID-19. If you do not complete the declaration you may not be able to board your flight, or you may experience delays when you arrive in Australia.
Before you come to Australia, you may also need:
- a valid visa to enter Australia
- to submit an exemption to Australia’s travel restrictions
- authority to enter Australian states or territories.
Starting your declaration
Before you start your declaration, have the below information ready:
- passport details
- vaccination details
- trip information
- destination details
- contact details.
You will need to create an account, which will allow you to manage your current and future declarations in one place. However, you cannot update your answers once a declaration has been submitted. You will need to submit a new Australia Travel Declaration and then delete the previous one. This includes if there is a change in your flight, health status or you made a mistake.
You can still create a new declaration, even if the old one has a message displaying it is being deleted.
Parents should complete a declaration for any child under 15 years of age. Anyone who is 15 years old and over should complete their own declaration.
You do not have to pay for an Australia Travel Declaration — it is free.
Note: Giving false or misleading information to the Australian Government is a serious offence. If convicted, the maximum penalty is imprisonment for 12 months.
Once you’ve completed the Australia Travel Declaration, you will receive an email confirmation with details you can show (either electronically or printed) before you board your flight and on arrival in Australia.
Your email will have either a:
- green response (with a tick), if you do not need to quarantine on arrival. This is based on your declaration that you are travelling to Australia from a country in Australia’s safe travel zone
- blue response (with an hourglass), if you need to quarantine on arrival
- red response (with a cross), your airline will decide if you can travel. If you are allowed to travel to Australia, you will need to quarantine on arrival.
Even if you have received the COVID-19 vaccine you must undergo 14 days of mandatory quarantine on arrival. This is to minimise the risk to the community from the introduction and spread of COVID-19.
All travellers should check the arrangements in both their place of arrival and place of final destination, as quarantine requirements are different in each Australian state and territory.

Safe travel zones
A safe travel zone is an agreement with another country to travel to Australia quarantine-free, provided a traveller has not been in a COVID-19 outbreak location in the last 14 days. Currently Australia has a safe travel zone agreement with:
COVID-19 conditions for safe travel zone flights from New Zealand
There is a pause on all New Zealand green zone flights from 11:59 pm (AEST) on 18 August 2021. All travellers on flights from New Zealand must go into 14 days of supervised hotel quarantine on arrival in Australia. They must adhere to the requirements of the state or territory they are entering.
